Youtube Takes new Approach

Youtube is now adding teams to help prevent or remove videos they believe violate their conditions of extremist content. Youtube’s CEO Susan Wojcicki posted a goal for Youtube to have more than 10,000 workers address content that violates their policies.

Machine learning is a field computer that can learn without having to be reprogrammed. This has allowed the teams that Youtube has hired to find and take down the videos that violate their terms and condition. Machine learning has removed over 150,000 videos for violent extremist content since June. With machine learning the teams can take down 70% of extremist content within 8 hours.

Wojcicki stated “It would’ve taken 180,000 people working 40 hours per week to assess without machine learning.”

Wojcicki also mentioned that Youtube is launching new comment moderation to help make the comment section a safer environment for the young audience. With the use of machine learning the teams have taken down an estimate of 50,000-100,000 predatory accounts.

The stricter approach is to prevent predatory behavior and accounts, Youtube is working closely with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the International Women’s Forum (IWF), and other safety organizations to help make it a better place on the internet.
