Mason Murdock awaits the snap before throwing a strike to his receiver Jayson Raines for a score.

After leading his team to a 3-1 record for the month junior Quarterback, Mason Murdock, was awarded WOHS Athlete of the Month for September. Standing at 6’0 tall, Murdock threw for 603 yards and 7 touchdowns in 4 games this month. Last week, I interviewed the star quarterback for further insight on what he thought about his season.

Coming into the new season, with a new coach and a new environment, what were you most excited for?

I was excited about the new system and leadership that Coach Grant brought into the program. He brings an intense, disciplined and high energy culture to the program and that we needed with the amount of talent that we have at each position. The whole team really bought into his change and we were determined to be successful. I continue to look forward to what this season brings in the future.

In the offseason, what were you mainly focused on to improve your game?

This offseason I really wanted to focus on becoming a good passer and reading the defense better than I did last year. This was a difficult task only having limited experience at the varsity level and limited resources. Also, I was able to improve my speed, strength and explosiveness doing drills everyday on a consistent basis.

What were some of the team’s goals? Individual?

Our team goals were to have a winning season, make it deep into the playoffs, and win the section and state championships. We wanted to settle for nothing less than the top. Individually, by the end of the season, my goal is to have 15 touchdowns and 1,500+ passing yards and to be an exceptional leader on the team.

Coach Grant on Murdock:

I think Mason is a great leader on and off of the field. He does a fantastic job getting teammates involved with the game. Despite being undersized, he plays very hard. Mason led us to three victories in the month of September.
