MakerSpace

MakerSpace

During lunch in the LMC, students can do homework, read books, and play video games. But there is something most WOHS students don’t know about. Meeting every day in the LMC during lunch, MakerSpace is an activity center run by Ms. Tindall, Ms. Pu and Ms. Krulik for students to go and learn how to create various items and do various activities. MakerSpace is not a club yet, but is open to all students as well as faculty. Sometimes faculty members even come down and share creative things they know how to do.

MakerSpace was started back when WOHS first went to block scheduling and lunch gained an extra 25 minutes. Ms. Tindall felt she wanted something for the students to do during lunch other than play video games. Noticing the activities going on in some public libraries, she thought it would be a good idea to adopt it in WOHS, so she started MakerSpace. MakerSpace’s first activity was to take the old tables in the library and cover them in old magazines to make it look nicer. Art classes came down to the library during lunch and helped with the project.

Today in Makerspace, activities vary daily. MakerSpace not only includes art-based activities, but they also do many STEM related activities such as programming and 3D printer workshops. MakerSpace also does many service projects to help kids with cancer, veterans and many others. On the WOHS library website, all of the MakerSpace activities for the week will be posted so students can decide what interests them. Ms. Tindall also has a Twitter that posts the activities @Bevtindall or

@WOHS.LMC. Ms. Tindall encourages students with talents or ideas to share them with her through her email [email protected] or her Twitter account and they will be allowed to share their ideas at makerspace.

Ms. Tindall loves Makerspace, especially seeing students interact with one another and making friends. Ms. Tindall is especially grateful for her student helpers, Isabelle Bise and Emily Berach. She’s also grateful for the support of Mr. Moore, Ms. Mullen and other administrators for helping supply her with supplies. MakerSpace is a fun activity center open to everyone with various activities that interest everyone.
