As the cherry blossoms begin to bloom and the birds start chirping, for many, that means that spring sports are back! From flag football to lacrosse to baseball, spring athletes have been waiting for this time of year.
For a small group of girls at the High School, the beginning of Spring means that Softball is back. After winning their division two years back to back, they are looking to win it again this year. During the off-season, the team has been working hard on their hitting, batting, and fielding skills to face any opponent they take on.
Returning Senior Captain Jaime Dolegowski commented that she “expects games to be more difficult to win than they were last year, but she believes this can have a winning record.”
New Junior Captain, Leilani Bird, mentioned that she “expects growth not only in the teams’ skills but also in our attitudes and teamwork. As we’re facing much better competition than in previous years, I’m excited to play tighter and more competitive games, which drastically help grow the atmosphere of the team. Even if we don’t overachieve, like win every game, I expect to enjoy the journey with my teammates.”
This year, the team faces fierce competition such as Glen Ridge and Verona. No matter how strong a competitor is, the team is excited to play each and every game, as expressed by both captains, Jaime Dolegowski and Leilani Bird.
“I’m very excited for this season. I want to make my last season the best one, and I believe it can be,” stated Jaime. Leilani thinks similarly, as she’s “extremely excited for this season; it was on my mind all throughout the off-season”.
The softball team’s lineup this season is looking exceptionally strong, with strong freshmen athletes, Muriel Deer and Lilyn Chrobocinski, and a strong junior class. Juniors Madelyn Cancel, Chloe Chrobocinski, and Jordyn Batts, just to name a few, have been helping the team both offensively and defensively during the pre-season and will continue throughout the season.
It is a no-brainer that the softball team has the grit, determination, and motivation to give it their all on the field. We wish the team good luck and much success for this upcoming season.
