The West Orange High School boys’ tennis team is ready to swing into a new season.
After finishing off their last season with a tough loss in the quarterfinal round to Montclair, the boys are hoping to have a superior season this spring.
This season, seniors Adarsh Jacob, Brandon Chen, Jayden Davie, Abedelrahamn Hamouda, and Kai Jarvis all show great potential for an exciting season. While head coach Jeffery Mazurek is excited about not only what the seniors can bring, but what the entire team can display.
The senior captains were interviewed by members of the West Orange High School Newspaper staff on March 22nd at the annual West Orange High School Sports Media Day. At the event, they were asked many questions about expectations for next year and the team dynamics.
When losses come their way, the tennis team looks at them as lessons they can learn from. They believe in letting go of losses and moving forward. According to them, it is all a physiological battle.
Other than the current senior captains, there are many underclassmen that are ready and willing to take on the captain positions in the future. These include juniors Julian LaFontant, Ty Kops, and Logan Marcus. Also, sophomores Zach Jaffee, Liam Dodson, and Ben Fox.
Zach Jaffee specifically stands out, as he has gone undefeated in all his matches so far in his high school career. Again, another outstanding candidate for tennis captain in the coming years.
Recently, the tennis team beat Caldwell in the Essex County Consolation final 5-0. Even with the amount of losses they have accumulated, the tennis team is a very close group of players, and they are very competitive with each other.
Coach Mazurek agreed with this sentiment by stating “When we win, we win together, when we lose, we lose together.” Hopefully, the West Orange team will continue to move forward from the losses and strive to have a successful season.
