Once again, Spring Break has come around, and it’s safe to say that all high school students are looking forward to the break. But, if we don’t have school, what are we going to do all day? Most teens will respond with answers like vacation, sleeping in, staying up late, and more. But in reality, most kids spend their spring break on their phones.
Studies show that the average time spent on social media a day by teens is five hours, not counting time spent watching TV or on other devices. Now, this article isn’t here to lecture you about your screen time, it’s to inspire you to not spend your spring break doom-scrolling on TikTok and do something meaningful. Here are some ideas:
Try out a New recipe:
While you’re at home, you’re going to need to eat, so you might as well make something good. There are so many recipes online that you can print out or find in cookbooks your parents might own. Cooking or baking for yourself and others is a great way to learn something new and make sure you’re getting a good meal during break. It’s also super fun when you share your goodies with friends and family and show them your new skills.
Clean Your Room:
Now, nobody wants to spend their spring break cleaning, but sometimes cleaning, while not fun in the process, can be very rewarding. Spring Break is a great time to get rid of old clothes or do a light dusting on your shelves. Not only will your parents be pleased, but you will feel accomplished and have a slightly cleaner space for yourself.
Go for a Walk:
With the weather for next week, a light walk is the perfect outdoor activity for the break. Not only will it be beautiful out, but walking is a great way to stay active and get fresh air if you don’t have many plans. Even better, try finding a park or trail you can follow, put your AirPods in, and enjoy the nature surrounding you.
Listen to a new album:
While this one might not be totally phone-free, listening to a new album is a great way to relax and discover, and appreciate new music. You can sit outside on your porch or just lay on your bed, close your eyes, and really pay attention to the music. This will not only get you off your phone, but you may discover your new favorite song.
Workout:
Staying active during break is super important, especially because many teens won’t be moving nearly as much because there won’t be school. Doing a home workout, going for a run, or going to the gym are all great ways to move your body and stay strong during the week.
Do something artistic:
Another great way to get away from the screen is to do some arts and crafts. You could draw, paint, do sidewalk chalk, make a bracelet, and so much more. All of these activities are great ways to spend your time and get some creative juices flowing. The best part is, you don’t need to be an artist, just do something for yourself.
Volunteering With Friends:
Maybe you and your friends want to get together during break, but you don’t want to spend money. Try volunteering somewhere, maybe a food pantry or soup kitchen. Volunteering is an awesome way to give back to the community over break and help others. Doing it with your friends will make it even more enjoyable, and you’ll get out of the house for a few hours.
If you’ve made it this far, I hope this article has inspired you to get off your phone this break and do something real. Maybe, this has even motivated you to try and get off your phone more often and focus your life on more than a small screen. Either way, I hope you have an amazing spring break.
