National Girls and Women in Sports Day

National+Girls+and+Women+in+Sports+Day

February 7th marks the 31st anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). It was created in 1987 to recognize women in sports. That same year it served as a remembrance to Flo Hyman, an Olympic volleyball player who was dedicated to promoting gender equality in sports. Since then, NGWSD is celebrated across the nation with different events. The day is organized by the NGWSD coalition, made up of different programs that relate to women and fitness.

According to the  NGWSD website, “only 40% of high school girls are currently playing sports, leaving three-in-five, girls without the opportunity to compete.” WOHS however, has many girl’s sports to offer, such as soccer, softball, tennis and many more. To honor NGWSD, the Girls Basketball Team played February 7th at home against Millburn. The game started at 7:00pm, with the girls battling hard in the 1st quarter. They tied the game with a score of 7-7. In the 2nd quarter, the girls were able to rebound and had a 9 point lead over Millburn with a score of 25-16. West Orange continued to lead the game with a score of 46-29 in the third quarter, and won the game 58-31. Their season record is 17-1, making the Lady Mountaineers the SEC Conference Champs for the first time in school history.

Other WOHS girls sports teams also had successful seasons. The Girls Volleyball Team won the SEC Colonial Championship for the first time in school history. Also, the girls soccer and tennis teams went to the playoffs this season. Just recently, the Cheerleading team went to Orlando to compete in the National High School Cheerleading Competition where they placed 3rd in the nation for their gameday routine, and 7th in the nation for their competition routine. Congrats to all the girls on their successful seasons!
