What Age is Too Old?
Halloween is a vastly celebrated holiday that children across the country excitedly dress up for. With its gothic tone, fun antics, and creative atmosphere, Halloween seems to have something for everyone. But where does it stop? When does it become too childish to dress up and ask for candy? Sure, plenty of people still dress up in college, but when does trick or treating end?
People at West Orange High School (WOHS) have varying thoughts on when you’re too old, and what to do once you reach that age. “I would say it depends on the person but in general I would say you are too old to go trick-or-treating when you turn 18 or go to college,” says WOHS sophomore Giovanna Winning. Winning continued, “Some alternatives to trick-or-treating are having a halloween party or costume party, or giving out the candy yourself and going all out to decorate for Halloween.”
“I haven’t trick-or-treated since sophomore year,” said senior Isabelle Bise. “I think 18 is too old for trick-or-treating. Alternatives, still dress up, go over to a friend’s place and hang out. Give out treats and entertain kids. Going to a haunted house is fun. Buy a bunch of cheap candy and feasting is also a good option [sic],” Bise continued, “I went trick-or-treating last year, but only on my street. Senior Cameron Gart stated, “I probably won’t go trick-or-treating this year,” then continued, “I’d say that around 15 is too old to trick-or-treat. Instead of trick-or-treating yourself you can chaperone younger siblings when they go out, or you can give out candy.” Whatever age trick or treating stops at, most of WOHS agrees that Halloween is still a fun holiday.
