Better Safe Than Sorry: Increasing School Security

School is supposed to be a place where children learn, interact with others, and gain new experiences. A place where parents don’t need to worry about their child’s well being. However, violence in schools seems to be an increasingly more concerning issue.

This could be attributed to the lack of security in schools. Many high schools have only 5-6 unarmed security guards, with the majority of schools not using metal detectors on a day-to-day basis making it much easier for weapon violence to occur in schools. Since 2013 alone, there have been over 200 school shootings across America. A statistic like this is unnerving and alarming, which begs the question: how can this be stopped?

The answer is security. To ensure the safety of all children in school, there should be a higher security presence than there is now. A big part of this would be more lightly armed guards patrolling the school. There should also be mandated metal detectors in the school’s entrances. Also, on any counts of suspicion, a student’s bag and locker would be immediately searched.

While many might argue this takes away the freedom of students, it would be a necessary evil to make sure parents across America are able to go about their day without having to worry about their child’s safety.
