In the Heights: Preview
WEST ORANGE, Nj — The West Orange Drama Club will be performing the hit musical “In the Heights,” written by Lin Manuel. From the same creator of “Hamilton,” viewers can expect sick rap verses along with the unique hot and lively climate of Washington Heights. With Wendy Mapes directing, and Mr Hellier as vocal director the show should be outstanding.
Junior, Ruben Centeno, plays Usnavi, originally played by Lin Manuel Miranda. Usnavi lives in Washington Heights, NYC, a poor burrow of predominantly hispanic citizens. Every character dreams of leaving the Heights for bigger and better things. The musical focuses on Usnavi’s experiences and interactions in Washington Heights. Along with a colorful cast of characters and a lively dance atmosphere there is a rhythmic flow never before seen in a West Orange High School production.
Ms. Mapes firmly believes that the show is a “fun and inspiring story about finding your voice in the world.” She could not express enough how much the show replicates “real life struggles that people face today, such as immigrant struggles and economic difficulties.”
Overall, Ms. Mapes wants the audience to walk away understanding the importance of finding their place.
“Don’t give up on your dreams, don’t give up on your family, [and] don’t give up on yourself,” stated Mapes.
“In the Heights” is a must see, the musical will be held April 12, 13, 14, and 15.
