Giants: What’s to Come
West Orange, NJ — On Nov. 28, former head coach, Ben McAdoo officially decided to bench starting Giants quarterback, Eli Manning for the first time in fourteen years ending his 211 game streak as starting quarterback. McAdoo’s decision was a bold move that many football fans disagreed with and viewed as a disrespect to the Manning legacy.
Philip Rivers from the Los Angeles Chargers simply stated that the move was “pathetic.”
With a landscape of problems from star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. getting injured Week 5 to the underachievement of a defense widely regarded as elite heading into 2017, the Giants franchise has become a joke in not only the NFC, but the NFL.
On Dec. 4 2017, owners John Mara and Steve Tisch made the decision to release head coach Ben Mcadoo, along with general manager Jerry Reese. It was the start of an expected rebuilding for the team.
“You oughta stop blaming Ben and Jerry. if you want to blame anyone, blame me,” stated John Mara.
With a current record of 3-13 on Jan. 3, most people expect the team to tank the season in return for a higher draft pick for the 2018 NFL Draft. During a press conference, Mara assured the media that would not be the case, and the team would go out and try to win as many games as possible for the remainder of the season.
With a projected draft pick within the #2 and #4 range, most scouts speculate the selection of a franchise signal-caller, to take over the torch Eli will pass in a few years. Sam Darnold, from the University of Southern California, Josh Rosen, from the University of California, Los Angeles, or Baker Mayfield, of the Oklahoma Sooners who recently just won the Heisman award, are all viable options.
Although this draft pick will affect current quarterbacks on the team like Manning, backup Geno Smith, and current rookie Davis Webb, there will be a secured and structured sense of leadership established come training camp next August.
