2018 Golden Globes
On Jan. 7, millions of people tuned in to NBC to watch the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards. This award show acknowledges the previous year’s best in cinema and television.
Host Seth Meyers opened the night with a monologue addressing the numerous accusations of sexual misconduct, and somehow still managed to keep it humorous through connecting the plots and titles of 2017’s biggest hits, such as “Get Out,” “Call Me by Your Name,” and “Stranger Things,” to actual events of 2017.
One particular highlight from the night gained rapid attention. Oprah Winfrey won the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, she gave a rousing speech directed to “all the young girls watching” about the importance of perseverance and determination, and addressed the constantly-throbbing issue of sexual misconduct that’s been plaguing Hollywood for the past few months.
In her speech Oprah said, “I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you, but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even during our darkest nights. So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”
