An Interview With Ms. Baker
What subjects and grades do you teach?
I teach Contemporary World Literature to seniors, and Honors IH English 10 to sophomores.
How long have you been teaching?
I’ve been teaching since 2007, so it’ll be 11 years this year
Have you always wanted to be a teacher?
No, I did not. I always loved english, but I wanted to actually be a publicist. I worked in marketing and publicity for a year and a half ‘cause my bachelor’s degree’s actually in marketing and I minored in english. But, I hated it. It was really bad.
Does being a teacher change your views on any topics?
Being a teacher has changed my views on, just education overall because I look at it from all aspects. I look at it as a teacher, I look at it as a mother, as a sister so I try to understand all aspects of a child’s life in order to better help him/her with their work.
What do you like to do during your free time?
I like to watch movies, read books (when I can), eat [laughs], I like to go to restaurants and eat. And of course, hang out with my son.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
I think my interactions with the students, and I like the curriculum that I teach.
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
[sigh] I decided to become a teacher because, honestly, I didn’t have any other options. I was either gonna be a writer or a teacher, and I didn’t want to be a writer. So I figured, you know I have good social skills. Why not try to educate the children of the world?
Do you have a favorite moment of your career? If so, what is it?
My favorite moments are when students come back to me and tell me how I helped them with, whether it be reading or writing, I love that because I know that I’m not just here for no reason. I’m not just standing in front of them and it’s going in one ear and out the other. They’re listening and they’re applying what I taught them and it works.
What motivates you?
My parents and my son. It’s not a lie, they are the ones that motivated me the most to make sure that I stay resilient, I stay determined, and of course, be responsible.
