2020 Summer Olympics Postponed To Next Year

Yesterday afternoon, Prime minister Shinzo Abe of Japan, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach agreed to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to the severity of the COVID19 outbreak. The agreement stated the Olympics would occur beyond 2020 but no later than the summer of 2021. This agreement comes just 48 hours after the IOC said they would need 4 weeks to decide on the Olympic game status. The Olympics were virtually the last sporting event to go as planned, with the opening ceremony to start on July 24th.

Despite the postponement, the Olympics next year will still be called the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic flame in Fukushima will still remain intact. The wait to see the best athletes in the world compete continues.
