Meet the Staff: Devin Wilkes

Q: How did you become interested in Journalism?

A: Through the Intro to Journalism class. I ended up taking it by accident because my first two choices were filled but I ended up enjoying it because I found I was able to combine my love for writing with the ability to use my own voice.

Q: What is your position at the Pioneer?

A: I am the Editorials editor.

Q: What are your favorite types of articles to write about?

A: I really like writing entertainment articles because I love all things pop culture and keeping up with the latest celebrity news. I also like writing editorials because I have the freedom to express my opinion on a topic that I feel passionate about.

Q: What do you like to do outside of school?

A: Outside of school I enjoy reading, going to different art museums, and binge-watching TV.

Q: If you could read only one book, watch one movie, and listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?

A: For a book I would say The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky because it’s been one of my favorite books since middle school. For a movie it would be Mean Girls because I can watch it a million times and still find it hilarious. It’s really hard for me to choose just one song but I think I would go with “So Far (It’s Alright)” by The 1975. I have very fond memories of when I listened to that song for the first time and I still never get tired of it.

Q: What are you most excited about for this school year?

A: I am excited to make new friends this year, although that may be harder since we’re starting off virtually.

Q: What is your favorite subject (besides Journalism) and why?

A: My favorite subject is History. Ever since I was in elementary school, I’ve been fascinated with the way in which people have lived in the past, and I also enjoy learning about how things ended up the way they are today.

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: My mom is my role model because she is smart, ambitious, and not afraid to speak her mind; and most importantly, she has a big heart.

Q: What do you want to major in college and why?

A: I want to major in Journalism because my dream job is to be an editor for a major publication.

Q: If you can say one sentence to the entire world, what would it be?

A: “You only live once!” I try my best to live by that philosophy.
