Is it Too Early to Start Decorating for Christmas?

Imagine this: it’s the day after Halloween, and you decide to run some errands and happen to be at your local Macy’s. Once you enter the store, you see Christmas sweaters being hung up in the front, the smell of candles that are cookie scented, and Mariah Carey’s“All I Want For Christmas Is You” starts playing on the intercoms. It’s only the first day of November, yet you stop to wonder, is it too early to start decorating for Christmas?

Despite Thanksgiving being the holiday celebrated before Christmas, it’s highly underrated compared to its counterpart. Thanksgiving is the time of year where you get together with your family and explain what you’re thankful for. Though you might not share why you’re thankful during Christmas, you still get to spend time with family, open up your presents, and overall have a wonderful holiday.

“It’s never too early to start decorating” is probably the most common phrase you’ll hear this month.

Even during COVID-19, the rules for decorating early didn’t change. Many families had to spend Thanksgiving alone because they couldn’t invite their extended family to avoid the risk of contracting the virus. Christmas decorating is what gets people in the Christmas spirit. This time, they can forget for just one second of their lives the stress and anxiety that COVID has been giving them, and this honestly goes for everyone.

Thanksgiving decorations include mats, kitchen towels, utensils, and essential kitchen items with iconic Thanksgiving elements on them. Christmas decorations act more as decorations. You can usually see; the traditional tree, ornaments, stockings, and other household items during this time of year. Most retail stores go big when selling Christmas decorations as they make more money selling these items that year. It’s easy to attract a customer to start decorating so early.

In the month of November, there has been more advertising for Christmas than Thanksgiving or even Black Friday. Stores like Bath & Body Works have had sales for their traditional holiday scented candles, perfumes, lotions, and other essential products. Spotify has been playing Christmas theme commercials for weeks.

Though the argument of whether it’s too early to decorate for Christmas has been debated, this doesn’t stop people from expressing their love for the holiday. But, this does take away any excitement for Thanksgiving.
