Practical Ways to Practice Self-Care
High school is already stressful enough without a global pandemic, and as we deal with draining tasks like monotonous Zoom calls and daunting college applications, it is easy to forget to practice self-care. This doesn’t only mean luxurious baths and face masks— it’s also the simple things like drinking water, going outside, and reminding yourself of your worth. I would be lying if I said I did these things regularly, and it’s okay not to have the time or motivation all the time. You shouldn’t feel guilty about taking care of yourself. It’s not selfish to make your mental and physical health a priority. Practicing self-care is different for everyone, so you should find a balance of activities that work for you. Here are some ways that you can achieve that best version of yourself.
Physical
- Eat three meals a day with a balanced diet.
- Drink enough water. (According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, this is about 11.5 cups a day for women and 15.5 cups a day for men.)
- Go outside and take a walk, ride your bike, or go to the park.
- Stretch to get your blood flowing and decrease muscle soreness.
- Try to keep a sufficient and consistent sleep schedule.
- Wash your face.
- Take a shower and put on clean, comfortable clothes.
