Go For the Slam Dunk!
The Girls’ Basketball Team embarked on another season on December 16th. Coach Caniece Williams heads the Varsity team, with Coach Jackie Cruz as the JV head coach. Meghan Colabella and Doug Nevins serve as assistant coaches to both of these teams. At press time, both teams had wrapped up their season opener games at home against Mount St. Dominic.
The first JV game started at 5:30pm in West Orange High School. In the first quarter of the game, the score was close with MSD winning by 2 points in a score of 5-7. The score remained close in the 2nd half with WO scoring 3 more points and MSD scoring 4 more points, making it 8-11. WO was able to lessen the gap between the teams during the 2nd half. They ended up being behind MSD by 1 point in a score of 20-21 in the 3rd quarter, but was able to rebound and win the game with a score of 32-22.
Varsity played at 8:00, also in West Orange High School. They were able to hold a wide margin against MSD throughout the game. In the 1st half, the score was 13-3 in the first quarter and 22-10 in the second quarter. The team was able to hold a 20 point lead over MSD in the 3rd quarter with a score of 33-13, and won the game with a score of 40-23. Looking back on last season, the Varsity team had a record of 10-16.
After winter break, Varsity and JV’s next home game of the season is scheduled for January 3rd in the Tarnoff Gymnasium. The freshman girls basketball team has a home game scheduled the same day in the PVW gym. Good luck to the girls on their season!
