The Future for WOHS Journalists
Every Journalist has to start somewhere for West Orange High School kids it’s the school’s journalism program. Whether it be Intro to journalism, newspaper, yearbook, or broadcast our high school has many different programs made specifically to hone one’s journalistic ability.
The journey starts off with our school’s intro to journalism that’s open to students in all grades. This class is where students learn all the wonders of journalism. In the intro classes, all of our young journalists get to dip their feet in the world of writing, learning all the ins and outs of writing. The students are taught the different styles of writing and examine news stories learning how to write their own. If they choose to continue their journey they are encouraged to join either our newspaper or broadcasting classes.
Our Newspaper classes are open to all upperclassmen. In the newspaper classes students get a feel of what it is like to do real interviews and write real articles that are read by some of their peers and other residents of the town. They do interviews, attend events, and use real journalistic sites. In Newspaper your ideas are gold.
Next year we plan to bring our broadcasting program back! This class helps students get a feel of TV journalism like news. They learn how to handle equipment, edit videos/audio, and write storyboards. Our school has an amazing production room and helps give experience to those who want to pursue journalism in a TV aspect.
The last step in our journey is to the yearbook class which is open to all dedicated 12th graders who apply. Yearbook class, like many of our programs, is really important. It is a class where your work will be viewed by most, if not all of West Orange High School’s seniors. This class focuses on the planning and production of the yearbook which includes layout, editing, captioning, photography, etc.
Our school offers amazing programs and we hope to see you in one next year!
