November 5th, 2023 – New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe receives the American League Gold Glove.
The young infielder is the first rookie in Yankees history to win the Gold Glove. He is also the youngest player to win the award at 22 years and 156 days old, passing Allen’s former shortstop, Alan Trammell.
When asked about the award, he said, “I never really had goals or anything like that going into the season, numbers-wise, but when you can put yourself in Yankees history, that’s pretty crazy.”
Joining the Yankees this season after playing his stint with the Yankees’s minor league affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, Volpe has been a rising star for the New York baseball team.
“For a 22-year-old shortstop of the New York Yankees that won a job in Spring Training, essentially barely playing over Double-A, I think on balance it’s been a really strong debut,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
This season, Volpe was very efficient on the defensive side of the ball. He had 560 total chances at the shortstop, and with 186 putouts and 63 double plays. All of this with only 17 errors.
On the hitting side, Volpe wasn’t as prolific. He ended the season with a .209 batting average with 167 strikeouts. Volpe may be a young prodigy, but he still has much to clean up with his offensive game. However, he does have a high ceiling for potential.
Many fans like to call Volpe a “hometown hero” since he graduated from Delbarton High School in Morristown, New Jersey. This New Jersey pride has made many fans love Volpe; some may even call him a “fan favorite.”
Boone also showed his support for Volpe by stating, “There’s no doubt that he’s going to be one of the cornerstone guys for us moving forward in the future.”
