The girls basketball team at West Orange High School started the year off with a bang after being ranked in the top 20 teams list on NJ.com. The team, currently sitting at a 7-2 record, was ranked as the 17th school in the state, following schools such as Ocean Township in 18th place, and University High School at 16.
Led by senior captain Mya Bushrod the Mountaineers have beaten the likes of Teaneck, Mount Saint Dominic and Paterson East Side. The team also participated in the KSA tournament where they went undefeated (3-0) against schools from all across the country including schools from Georgia, Colorado and Tennessee. Although, they have fallen to Rutgers Prep and Montclair Immaculate.
The team currently boasts a 1-1 record in their division, the American in the SEC (Super Essex Conference.)
The girls have 14 games left on their schedule facing teams like Columbia High School, University High School, and Newark Academy.
Junior Aanya Kerriem leads the team in scoring this year followed closely by her fellow junior Kyley Gary-Grayson with 90, and 87 points respectively. The two have been lighting the lamp night in and night out to get the team into the list.
This is the first time this season the Mountaineers have made the Top 20 list, and there is a lot more where that came from.
