“And the award goes to…”
The Golden Globes aired January 8th, 2017 at 8:00. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the awards show celebrates excellent work in television and film. He opened the show by doing a La La Land themed cold open with appearances by Tina Fey, Ryan Reynolds, and Justin Timberlake.
In the TV category of the awards show, the first award of the night was given to Tracee Ellis Ross for her role as Rainbow Johnson in the hit ABC comedy, Black-ish. Donald Glover won for best actor in a comedy for his role as Earnest Marks on the show Atlanta. Atlanta also won for best comedy.
The Netflix show The Crown won for best drama and The Crown actress Claire Foy won for best performance by actress in a television series – drama for her role as a younger Queen Elizabeth II. Billy Bob Thornton won best actor for the same category for his role as Billy McBride on the Amazon show Goliath.
The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story won two out of the three awards given in the limited television show category by winning best limited television show and Sarah Paulson winning as best actress in a limited television show. Hugh Laurie won best actor in a limited television show for the show The Night Manager. Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman won for best supporting actor and actress in a limited television show.
Moving to movies, La La Land won 7 Golden Globes including best actor in a musical motion picture, Ryan Gosling, best actress in a musical motion picture, Emma Stone, and best musical motion picture.
Moonlight won for this year’s best drama movie. Casey Affleck won for best actor in a drama motion picture for Manchester by the Sea and Isabelle Huppert won best actress in a drama motion picture for the foreign film, Elle. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Viola Davis won for best supporting actor and actress in any type of motion picture. Other movie wins included Disney’s Zootopia for best animated movie and Elle for best foreign language film.
