After years of a disappointed fanbase and low viewership, SNL is back. Season 50 of the comedy show Saturday Night Live premiered recently and views have been off the charts. Recently, they blew up for one of their skits where Arianna Grande sang a comedic parody of Sabrina Carpenter’s hit song “Espresso.” The first episode of season 50 premiered on September 28th and had 5.3 million viewers worldwide, the most since 2020. Not only are they experiencing their best year in a while, the show is celebrating its 50th season, making it one of the longest-running shows on American television.
Along with this historic anniversary for the show and a brand new season premiering, a movie following the 90 minutes leading up to the first SNL episode ever came out on October 11th and was a major hit. The movie titled “Saturday Night” had notable appearances from Dylan O’Brien, Lamorne Norris, and Finn Wolfard, and was directed by Jason Reitman. After less than one week in theaters, the movie grossed almost 5 million dollars and SNL original cast member Dan Aykroyd says the film was a “stand-alone masterpiece” and a “perfect window into the creative process at its highest level.” While many of the original cast members have differing opinions on the motion picture, the public is loving it all around.
Considering the amount of doubt and worry about the future success of the show, SNL is doing pretty well right now. Combining the growing success of the new season and the blockbuster movie that came out this bunch of comedians seems to have a great season ahead of them. And if you’re interested, new SNL episodes premiere almost every Saturday at 11:30 pm on NBC.
