Universal Dance Association College Nationals 2025
The “dance Super Bowl” was held this past weekend, with college students from all over the country competing. It’s a relatively low-key event outside of the dance community. That being said, it is nearly identical to the College Football Playoff National Championship game.
Student dancers devote almost all of their time to training for the UDA. While most students return home for the holidays. Dancers are required to stay on campus and train for approximately 12 hours every day. This year’s UDAs took place at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, from January 17 to 19. The competition lasted three days and featured plenty of action. There are three stages: preliminary, semi-final, and final. There are four categories: Pom, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Game Day. Only ten teams will become nationally ranked. The competition takes place in two separate divisions: Division 1A and Division 1. Colleges arrive a few days early to rehearse and demonstrate their school spirit. The reigning champions, the University of Minnesota, even traveled in a customized jet.
This year, Ohio State embodied a notion of a comeback story. Dressed in full black with red gloves to highlight the jazz piece. However, they also highlighted the faults, particularly the turns. So, when the defending champions did their pre-luminaries, supporters were extremely dissatisfied. Especially when one of their dancers slipped out of her turns. However, when the final day arrived, the choreography appeared to be designed specifically for them, particularly those dancers. Ohio State won gold for Jazz, as well as additional gold and silver medals.
It premiered on Varsity TV. However, most viewers were introduced to some of the best dances in the country via social media. Dance is not adequately recognized as a sport in general, especially at the collegiate level. It’s time to give credit where it deserves.
