Nominated for ten Oscars, Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, is on the top of everybody’s watchlist. And as it should be! The movie followed the first act’s storyline of its Broadway rendition, which premiered in October of 2003. Promos have driven high interest in the film, with a multitude of memes being made with every interview. Critics say that while the play holds sentimental value and wow only a theatre can provide, the movie had far greater production and more backstory. With all the accolades this movie has received, and all the talented actors taking a role, it was bound to be pop-u-lar.
Cynthia Erivo couldn’t have been a better pick for the role of Elphaba, a witch who aspires to do good despite the prejudice due to the green color of her skin. Erivo’s voice stunned the audience, as all of her songs were sung live (even as she was flipping and flying). Her powerful vocals leave no question as to why she was an obvious pick. Her acting didn’t fall short of perfection either, leaving her with an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, along with Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, Mikey Madison, and Karla Sofia Gascon.
Ariana Grande took the screen by storm as well, leaving many who know her from Sam & Cat or Victorious pleasantly surprised. Despite her huge profile as one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world, Grande completely transforms into her character Glinda. Glinda is a character who is seen as the perfect witch but struggles to see that within herself. Although there was no doubt about it, Grande’s voice was astounding, proving to the viewers that she’s got everything it takes.
The play is well known for its music, including songs like “Popular”, “No One Mourns the Wicked”, and “Defying Gravity”. The movie didn’t stray far from this soundtrack, only choosing to add some expansions and minor changes. Additionally, the budget was $150 million, and not a cent was left behind as 9 million tulips were planted and an entire train was built for the ride into Emerald City. Money was certainly no problem though, with a $717 million grossing worldwide making it the highest-grossing-Oz-related film. Many tributes to the book were made, like when they opted for the silver heels rather than the red. Likewise, tributes to the Wicked play were made as Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, actors of the original Broadway musical, made a cameo. If you love musicals, captivating storylines, or just amazing movies in general, it may be time to give Wicked a watch.
