NEW ORLEANS, LA—Super Bowl LIX (59) took place on Sunday, February 9, 2025, and left the Philadelphia Eagles as champions after their blowout performance, with a final score of 40 to 22. However, despite this year’s champions’ dominant form, a fair amount was learned for both sides.
For the Eagles:
Jalen Hurts is the Franchise Starter
Questions were beginning to arise about whether Hurts was the future of the franchise. However, the Super Bowl and these playoffs put that debate to rest.
Hurts has now set the record for most rushing touchdowns in the playoffs by a QB in NFL history with 10, five of which came from this playoff run. Now, yes, he does benefit from the tush push play, but he is truly one of the only active QBs who can use it as effectively as he can, remember, he squats 600 pounds.
Now, he also hasn’t just succeeded in the rushing game, since the start of October in 2024 to the end of his season after the Super Bowl win, Hurts only threw two interceptions while also throwing 19 touchdown passes.
Overall, Hurst’s contract that has him in Midnight Green until the 2029 offseason is looking good.
Mitchell and DeJean Will Be One of the Most Dangerous Duos in the NFL
The Eagles were able to pick up both Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in the 2024 NFL Draft. While both have been great, they both have had their moments to cement themselves as the new dynamic DB duo in the NFL.
For Mitchell, getting nominated for Defensive Rookie of the Year was his. For DeJean, he had his moment during the Super Bowl when he picked off Patrick Mahomes for a touchdown.
It has been known that these two will make teams regret letting the Eagles get both of them, but they have now made it official.
Zac Baun Needs to Return
The story of Zac Baun is an incredible one, a special teams player on the Saints just last year turned a Defensive Player of the Year nominee.
Zac Baun is up for a new contract, and while his DPOY nominee and All-Pro team appearance was already pretty much securing him as a must-resign for the Eagles. However, his seven tackles and interception in the Super Bowl proved that he is the future of the Eagles’ linebacker position.
No matter what his contract is, he needs to resign.
For the Chiefs:
No Team Will Ever Three-Peat
With KC’s loss, they lost the chance at being the first NFL team to three-peat in history (note: the Packers did kind of three-peat by winning the NFL championship and then winning two Super Bowls but they didn’t win three straight Super Bowls).
The Chiefs have been built to break the three-peat barrier, with Mahomes, Reid, a veteran WR core, and an elite defense, it seemed like if anyone was going to break the “three-peat barrier” it would be the Chiefs.
Now, the Chiefs have to start all over again, and even if they win the next two, they will have to deal with their star, Patrick Mahomes, 32 years old, which is out of their prime for most QBs, especially for a QB that relies on mobility like Mahomes.
So, unless another superteam comes along, with some kind of weird, young, mutant version of Mahomes and Brady, a three-peat in the NFL is unlikely.
The GOAT Debate is OVER
Since last year, people have begun to raise the question of “is Mahomes better than Brady?” This game ended the debate.
Mahomes looked lost against the Eagles, throwing two picks, a feat that only happened to Brady once in his 10 Super Bowl appearances, and in a game that he won. Also, Mahomes has now reached a record in the Super Bowl record of 3-2, a long cry from Brady’s 7-3.
So while a win in this game might have increased Mahomes in the GOAT debate, KC’s loss and Mahomes’s performance in the loss have ended any chance for Mahomes to catch up to Brady, unless he does something drastic.
Become the Villains Not the Jerks
The Chiefs have become synonymous in the NFL as the team that everyone wants to beat, they are the modern Patriots. However, they have become closer to being the jerks of the NFL rather than being the villains.
When the Chiefs began to try to attain the copyright to the term “three-peat” before they even won Super Bowl LIX lit a fire under the Eagles. As Eagles offensive lineman Milton Williams said it “definitely” played a role in the Eagles’ intensity saying that KC “were talking about getting the copyright and all that B.S. Throw that shi* in the trash.”
The Chiefs need to reconstruct their image, they will never be the heroes of the NFL. So why not be the villains? Why not be the Thanos of the NFL? They need to stop just being jerks and be the enemies of every NFL team.
