When it comes to female-lead comedy movies, they can be few and far between. Most comedy movies have been male-lead, established male comedians. While these movies are still hilarious, it is obvious that women are still not in the spotlight when it comes to comedy.
Back in January, the girl-buddy comedy film One Of Them Days was released. Directed by Lawrence Lamont and produced by comedian Issa Rae, the film follows two best friends Dreux and Alyssa, going through the trials and tribulations of finding money to pay their rent and avoiding eviction. Along the way, both girls realize how special their friendship is, and how much they need each other.
Both Dreux and Alyssa were played by actress and comedian Keke Palmer and R&B singer SZA respectively. This film is especially big as this is SZA’s acting debut, and she does an excellent job at the part.
Although this film came out in January, there is still much relevance to Women’s History Month. Palmer has shown advocacy for Women’s History Month, with her partnering with Amazon in 2022 to provide visibility to brands and businesses run by Black women. SZA is also a heavy advocate for women, winning Billboard’s Women Of The Year award at their 2023 Women In Music ceremony, and winning the Hal David Starlight Award.
This film brings dirty comedy back to the big screen. In the past 5 years, raunchy comedy movies have died down likely due to COVID-19, with most of them going on some kind of streaming platform. However, this film proves that these kinds of comedies can still have prevalence in theaters.
Other than Palmer and SZA, the film does an excellent job in regards to the casting. Stand-up comedian Katt Williams plays Lucky the homeless man who is adamant on having Dreux and Alyssa not wasting money at the local loan bank.
Maude Apatow, daughter of famous comedy film director Judd Apatow, plays a valley-girl stereotype Bethany, who moves into Dreux’s and Alyssa’s primarily Black apartment complexk, while displaying her naiveness when it comes to the Black struggle and how their landlord treats the other tenants. Also featured in the cast include stand-up comedian and actor Lil Rel Howery, and Abbot Elementary star Janelle James.
While this film is rated R, I would recommend someone who is of age to watch the film, especially during Women’s History Month. I believe that anyone who watches this will have an enjoyable experience, whether it’s due to the cast, exceptional writing, and a unique brand of humour that anyone would get a kick out of.
