This past week police had to show up at a school and arrest a student, for what? You might be asking. A student was caught on his phone in a school. Immediately a lockdown started, security carefully got the phone and the student separated for when the police arrived. For many people, this was a traumatizing event. Luckily the student was caught in the hallway just playing on it by themselves before he could get into a classroom and distract his peers. We got several teacher’s comments on this event. A statement from an English teacher was “When I was heading to my classroom I saw the student, he was one of my students, it was terrifying I knew if he was able to get into my class with the phone he would hurt the other students learning, AI is already just as terrifying and the Chromebooks can only block so much AI but phones they are much more scary.” We were able to get a statement from one of the security guards who was part of the efforts to help detain this student and phone “When I saw some students and staff running I knew something was wrong, I kept walking forward and then I saw the kid, they were sitting on the floor leaning against the wall on their phone, I knew I had to act fast for the sake of the rest of the students. I grabbed my walkie-talkie and called for backup and for someone to call the police. Getting this kid was nerve-racking but I had to do this, when we got them into a secure room we were able to contain the phone until the police arrived.” The kid was charged with Criminal possession of a phone and unlawful possession of a phone on school grounds. Since this is a class E felony he can get a max or minimum sentence. If the student was to get the max they would receive 4 years, they could get a fine, and a probation term of 5 years, but the judge will use your criminal record if you have one to determine your sentence.
