Boys basketball cruises past Nutley in home opener

Last night, the West Orange Freshman, JV, and Varsity boys basketball teams all took a win against Nutley. The Varsity boys won with a 60-50 score with Senior Jhensen Touze being the game’s point leader with 11 points which included four 2-pointers. Sophomore Nick Matos and Senior Connor Gannon both scored 10 points for West Orange.

“I’m excited. They did what we asked them to do.” said Coach Demond Cowins, who is now coaching basketball for his 17th season and his seventh full season with the West Orange boys, “…and all we asked them to do was come out, compete each day, and work hard. We are fortunate enough to get the win tonight.”

The plan going into the rest of the season is to, “…develop chemistry and develop as a sound defensive team,” said assistant Varsity Coach Edward Duncan, “[then] I think we are capable of having a successful season.” The boys showed their energy on defense last night with their impressive full-court pressure as they rode the Nutley boys, with two steals from Matos and one steal from Touze and Gannon a piece.

The next game for the boys will be away at Livingston this coming Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

“Next game, mentally, we just have to remain focused. Each game we just want to look to get better. That’s the advice for our boys.” said Cowins.
