The West Orange High School Girls Tennis Team has proven to be an inspiring addition to the fall season. Coach Mazurek and Coach Marini — in their 10th season working together — have expressed a positive outlook for the upcoming year.
To the players, they are most excited to tackle the challenges ahead as a tight-knit community. Their trust in one another and unwavering support lie at the foundation of their success. They have expressed that, “If someone’s not having a good match [we] go over to them, give them a talk, make sure they’re okay, [and] encourage them”.
Because tennis is essentially a solo sport, the players have come to understand that there is less of a community outside of the high school. However, by playing together, they have been able to form their own community. This has allowed them to learn from each other, teach each other, and develop relationships with their teammates, coaches, and the sport itself. Coach Mazurek commented that he was proud to see his players “taking ownership of their training” as they were caught running through drills when he was not looking. He is confident this will ultimately “lead them to success” this year.
Touching on the individuality of the sport, it is inevitable that there will be competition among the players. This could be trying out for a spot on the varsity team, determining where one falls in the lineup, or comparing skill levels. Yet, despite a little friendly competition, each of the players is aware that they are motivating themselves to work harder, and their actions stand to benefit the entire team. They agree that “when help yourself, you also help those around you”.
This year, the team is focused on winning through two distinct strategies. First, they hope to prioritize doubles. By developing chemistry between two players, the team will stand out from others in their division. In executing this plan, the coaches have noticed that any number of the girls can be matched up and emerge successful. This has helped to distinguish a connection between the entire team, who acknowledge that they all play a significant role in leading the group to victory.
Next, emphasizing that tennis is a game of honesty and honor will produce one-of-a-kind sportsmanship and define how the girls tackle their season. Since there are no umpires or referees during a match, the players are responsible for calling the shots. This allows them to better understand their relationship with the competitor, the game, and their values as an athlete. Coach Marini remarks, “Our kids are always at the top of their game ethically, morally, and athletically.”
With this mindset, the team hopes to expand upon its identity. That identity is of becoming the hardest working team on the court. They intend to maintain a resilient force. In doing so, they will be able to outwork and outlast their opponents, truly making a name for themselves.
This season, the Girls Tennis team has a lot in store, and it is important to show up and support these athletes who have built an incredible “mini family”, as they described. It is evident they are filled with hope, empowerment, and appreciation for one another and the sport they are so passionate about.
