There is no way to describe the uplifting energy you feel when you step into the West Orange High School dance room. Home to various classes, workshops, and the National Honors Society Dance Association, the creativity seems to pour out of the dancers. It is contagious even after you leave the room.
I have recently received an exclusive look into the National Honors Society for Dance Arts upcoming winter pep rally performance. I am confident in their ability to wow the crowd and leave a lasting impression. The board members of the NHSDA displayed laser focus as they learned, memorized, and executed choreography within 30 minutes.
It is apparent that the girls are in sync both in performance and while taking breaks. They talked through any mishaps and listened intently to one another. Their teamwork was a model of grace, communication, and determination. It is clear that everyone is invested in the future of the NHSDA, and diligently working towards procuring a show-stopper.
Established in 2021, the National Honors Society for Dance Arts has seen considerable growth through the years, and its president, Ainara Bouzas, elaborated on their goals for the future. In addition to workshops on hip-hop, jazz, salsa, and more, the NHSDA hopes to continue performing at West Orange High School events. This year, you can look forward to their performances at the winter pep rally, Lunar New Year, Italian Night, and the Black History Month Scholarship Gala — you also may have caught them during the celebration of Diwali. In this way, as their secretary Camila Rosario and their treasurer Kylie Gordon explained, they will be able to expand their reach within the high school and throughout the West Orange community.
But how does a board of dancers find footing to begin the process of choreography? Well, their process boils down to four steps:
First, they select a theme.
Next, they brainstorm songs that will adhere to their theme.
Then, they meet to watch videos for inspiration and decide the energy they want to convey.
Finally, each board member chooses a dance they wish to choreograph since there are often multiple dances in their lineup.
The board discussed that dance is not just a physical art, but a mental and emotional one as well. Dance is a way to express stories that expose a vulnerability or truth for the dancer and their audience. The board members were adamant that they felt a confidence unlike any other as they progressed through their years of dance. It was inspiring to see the sense of individuality they have developed within an environment built upon positivity.
Further, the board members feel they have taken valuable lessons from their time in dance. The leadership skills they have acquired are vital to their interactions outside of the studio. Bouzas, Rosario, and Gordon were particularly grateful for their understanding of compassion, communication, and persistence.
