Derek Sinlao (He/Him) was born and raised in West Orange, New Jersey, is currently a senior at West Orange High School, and is a new journalist for The Pioneer. 

In his free time, Derek likes to spend his time catching up on sleep. Derek does not play on a sports team but he enjoys playing badminton casually. If you see him with headphones on, know that he is most likely listening to brick music or secondary R&B. 

At home, Derek has an older brother, David, who is a senior in college. He and his brother David are very close; they are brothers but are best friends, too. 

Growing up in his home, he and his family are very sweet and welcoming, he says. He used to enjoy going on vacations with his family; one fond memory was his trip to Ocean City, Maryland. He is not only close with his brother but close with his family.

Derek says his favorite age was definitely 13 and 14 because school was just so easy for him, and he got to see his friends more than he sees them now. 

After Derek graduates high school, he wishes to pursue a psychology degree. Initially, he didn’t believe he would enjoy psychology until he was accidentally put in the class and fortunately enjoyed it. Derek can be contacted at [email protected]
